So I have been researching these do it yourself mosquito traps wondering if they actually work or not.
These traps usually claim a high amount of mosquitoes and gnats get trapped, so lets see how well they work.

Yeast Based Traps
1 Plastic Bottle (2-liter is preferred)
1 Cup Water
1/4 Cup Brown Sugar
1 Gram Yeast
Tape
Cardboard (to make bottle dark)
Boil water and add sugar to completely dissolve, let mixture cool. Add yeast into mixture and pour into bottle, place the top half upside down (like a funnel) and seal with tape. Take cardboard and wrap around bottle and tape seam. Replace mixture after two weeks.
Note: its easiest to make the cardboard sleeve before mixture has been added, then the sleeve can be removed when mixture needs to be replaced).

Vinegar Based Traps
1 Cup Apple Cider Vinegar
2-3 Drops Dish Soap
2-3 Pieces cut fruit
1 Plastic Bottle (2-liter is preferred)
Tape
Cardboard (to make bottle dark)
Pour vinegar in the bottle with dish soap and mix. Add a couple pieces of fruit (a slice of banana is fine), I used cantaloupe. Place top of bottle upside down (like a funnel) and seal with tape, put sealed bottle in cardboard sleeve and place outside where needed. Replace mixture after two weeks.

HERE IS THE ANSWER OF WHETHER THEY WORK OR NOT:
After a week I checked each trap and the vinegar based trap had a couple of bugs, while the yeast based trap had none. Now I do live on the fourth floor and while I don't see a lot of bugs I do see some, mainly gnats or flies. So in my opinion they really don't work, but maybe they do for people who get more mosquitoes.
