Is love in the air? Not sure but at least it looks a little more like it in our house. Since I have a thing for holidays I decided to work on some placemats. I honestly don't know why I suddenly want all these placemats, maybe it's the festive charm it adds, who knows? Now back to the details of this pattern, the finished size should be about 18" wide x 13" height. I did use two different patterns and piece them together to create these heartful placemats, hope you like them!
Supplies:
Hook Size: 4.5mm 7 for place mat
4.0mm G for granny square hearts
Red worsted yarn (I used Simply Soft Caron yarn)
Tapestry/Yarn Needle
Pins or Stitch Markers
Placemat pattern was modified from this easy to follow pattern. Using hook 7 follow the pattern until your mat reaches 13" width and height. Fasten off and we are now ready to begin working on the granny square hearts.

Granny square hearts were a little trickier but not too bad so here's the pattern. Using hook G follow the pattern make 3 hearts but do not fasten off. It's best if you lay the placemat on a flat surface and pin or use a stitch marker to indicate where each modified picot will go before you start stitching in place.
First heart (bottom right of mat)
For placement and attachment we are going to start at the point picot. So that will, be the fourth picot. Ch 1 stick hook down into the placemat pull yarn through, ch 1, sc in same space of heart. Repeat this version of the picot border for the next four picot spots. Continue standard picot border around to beginning fasten off and run tail back through work.
Second heart (middle of the mat)
Middle heart will continue picot border as established in original pattern, once you reach the point of the heart use modified picot, continue around with original method two more times, the modified version for the next 3 picot spots. Continue around to the beginning and fasten off, run tail though work and trim tails.
Third heart (top of the mat)
The final heart will start the modified picot about 3/4 of an inch in from the corner since this is not the outside picot. Proceed to do three more modified picots to join the heart to the placemat. The heart point is the final joining point until you get back around to the spot just before the beginning. Proceed to make three original style picots in the next spaces followed by two modified. There will be five more original picots then the final will be a modified to join in the last space to the placemat's corner. Fasten off and run tail through work, trim if needed.
